Mr. Shafer is a second-generation pump man, a Professional Engineer, published industry thought-leader and holds five centrifugal pump-related US Patents. He brings over 35 years of industrial and extensive experience in artificial lift Electric Submersible Pump (ESP) solution development and technical oilfield to the Extract management team. In his role as Vice President of Engineering & Technology, he demonstrates engineering and operational leadership in pump system design, development, application and reliability. Mr. Shafer manages the engineering personnel, processes and product’s design and inspires his teams to engineer ‘Relentless Reliability’. Mr. Shafer’s application knowledge enables Extract to deliver innovative, reliable, safe, efficient, effective applications and service solutions. He supports the Extract field and customer personnel by developing and providing technical product and application training.
Prior to joining Extract, Mr. Shafer worked at Dover Artificial Lift Systems for five years and served as Director of Product Line and Director of Engineering where he was directly responsible for defining and maintaining the Dover product offering, application and reliability performance of all Electric Submersible Pump (ESP) system components.
Mr. Shafer worked for 17 years at Centrilift, Baker Hughes and he held positions of increasing responsibility over time for product reliability earning his position as Director Reliability Assurance responsible for completion and production product lines, run-life studies and data metrics best practices for district operations. He served on Quality Review Boards and led or assisted customer’s critical root cause failure analyses (RCFA) and case managed the top systemic design and operations technical reliability issues, driving numerous continuous improvement projects. Mr. Shafer’s departmental management responsibilities ranged from horizontal pump and water systems engineering, growth and strategic technology, to performance assurance. His early promotions to project engineer and then manager of engineering focused him on engineering and innovation projects focused on optimizing reliability of abrasion-resistant pumps, gas separators and intake products. Mr. Shafer’s career began as a staff engineer, which provided him the opportunity to not only support manufacturing of pump products, but also to design specialized pump, gas separator and intake components.
Following graduation, Mr. Shafer with BW/IP International Inc., Pump Division (Flowserve Corp.) for seven years starting as an intern engineer working on development projects for vertical and submersible pump products. As a design engineer and later a senior design engineer, he provided technical support for pump products and performed multiple analyses on centrifugal pump castings, steel fabrications and ESP systems, then he designed custom components for pumps and motors to improve product performance.
